Reality TV: The Ultimatum

By: Hareem Mubashar

As we watch and settle into the sixth season of the iconic Netflix reality television dating show Love is Blind, it may be time to finally shed some light on reality TV hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey’s other venture, The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On. This reality show, like any other good one, is full of love, war, famine, and plague.

Let’s not waste time with the premise— the allure of Love is Blind is its messiness. The original premise of seeking to find love irrespective of physical appearance has devolved into a show that thrives off of drama and conflict. So for those who seek that excitement after this season of Love is Blind is over, The Ultimatum is the perfect follow-up.

Hosted by the Lacheys, the show has the same chaotic charm, except now it is dialed up to 11. The Ultimatum invites six unmarried couples in. The couples are split up as they choose new partners to spend a three week “trial marriage” with before returning to their original partner for three weeks. At the end, the couples decide if they will remain together and get engaged, or if they will break up. This premise attracts a certain subgroup of participants. Namely, those with absolutely no sense of self-preservation—and that kind of people make the best reality television.

With two seasons under its belt, The Ultimatum: France and a spin-off series, The Ultimatum: Queer Love, the franchise has proven to be very successful in the few years since its premiere in 2022. That comes as no surprise. The show fosters intense jealousy, insecurity, conflict, and an utterly insane amount of drama. From couples that leave within the first few episodes because they are unable to see their partner flirt with anyone else, despite that being exactly what they signed up for, to couples that have people face-palming at every interaction, it truly has everything that makes reality TV addicting.
